Please Note — Beta CourseThis is a beta of a language course, and at this stage, there will be mistakes. Although I strive for 100% accuracy, creating the material, and amending modules for over 60 modules, takes an awful lot of time. So please use this feedback form to tell me about the problem. I’ll try and rectify when I can. Some modules are more complete than others, and some, especially the more advanced ones, need a lot more work to bring them up to the required standard. All claims on the efficiency of the course are based on aspirational goals. Remember, this course is free, it has no ads, I just hope enough people are kind enough to buy me a coffee to make this venture worth while.

🎓 Setting the scene

Education in Bulgaria is not just a school topic. It comes up in job interviews, residence paperwork, university admissions, family conversations, and debates about the future of the country. This lesson should help a learner talk about their own studies and also understand how Bulgarians think about school, exams, and qualifications.

🎤 Scene-setting intro

Section 1

The Bulgarian education system

Understanding the structure before learning the words.

The Bulgarian education system has four main stages. Understanding these is useful both for conversation and for the citizenship exam context.

Lower secondaryпрогимназияmiddle school stage
Upper secondaryгимназия / средно училищеsecondary school, ends with state exams

💡 Матурата — the Bulgarian equivalent of A-Levels

The държавен зрелостен изпит (state maturity exam), commonly called матурата, is the Bulgarian school-leaving exam taken at age 17–18. Students must pass two compulsory exams (Bulgarian language, and one elective) to receive their diploma. It is a significant cultural milestone — results are published and widely discussed. The Bulgarian equivalent of UK A-Levels or the French baccalauréat.

💡 Bulgarian grading — 2 to 6

Bulgarian schools and universities use a grading scale from 2 to 6: 6 (отличен = excellent), 5 (много добър = very good), 4 (добър = good), 3 (среден = average), 2 (слаб = weak/fail). Unlike many countries, 6 is the top grade. A student who gets a 2 has failed. This catches many international students and parents off guard.

Dialogue — comparing education systems

A rich B1-level discussion.

💬 Dialogue — education systemsRead aloud

— Did you study in Bulgaria or abroad?
— I finished my secondary education in Bulgaria, and later I studied in London.
— What did you study?
— Law. I have a master's degree, but later the diploma had to be recognised in Bulgaria.
— Was it difficult?
— Quite bureaucratic. I had to submit certified documents and wait several months.
— How did the British system seem to you compared with the Bulgarian one?
— More open and more discussion-based. In Bulgaria people often learn more by rote.
— And which do you prefer?
— Both have strong sides. I like it when there is both discipline and critical thinking.
