Please Note — Beta CourseThis is a beta of a language course, and at this stage, there will be mistakes. Although I strive for 100% accuracy, creating the material, and amending modules for over 60 modules, takes an awful lot of time. So please use this feedback form to tell me about the problem. I’ll try and rectify when I can. Some modules are more complete than others, and some, especially the more advanced ones, need a lot more work to bring them up to the required standard. All claims on the efficiency of the course are based on aspirational goals. Remember, this course is free, it has no ads, I just hope enough people are kind enough to buy me a coffee to make this venture worth while.

This lesson is about sounding competent, respectful, and clear in the kinds of situations foreigners in Bulgaria actually face.

💡 Capitalised Вие — the mark of formal writing

In formal Bulgarian letters and emails, the second person singular and plural pronouns are capitalised: Вие, Вас, Ви, Вашият, Вашата. This is the written convention equivalent to using vous in French. It signals respect. Failing to capitalise these in a formal letter is considered impolite and unprofessional.

  4. What is the significance of capitalising Вие in formal Bulgarian writing?
Show answers

1. Free answer — use Уважаеми/а... · Пиша Ви относно... · Бих искал/а да... · С уважение.

2. E.g. informal Здравей → formal Уважаеми; ти → Вие; Искам → Бих искал/а.

3. (a) I am writing to you regarding... (b) Please find enclosed... (c) I remain at your disposal.

4. Capitalised Вие signals formal respect — equivalent to vous in French. Failing to capitalise is considered impolite in official correspondence.

💡 Tip: Writing by hand in Cyrillic is the fastest way to lock in new vocabulary. Even five minutes of handwriting beats reading the same words ten times.
