🌍 Setting the scene
This is not just a checkpoint. It is the moment where separate A2 topics start behaving like real life in Bulgaria: ordering lunch in a busy restaurant, explaining a symptom to a pharmacist, understanding the cultural references behind a holiday, or answering simple civic questions with confidence. If a learner reaches Day 35 properly, Bulgaria stops feeling like a list of words and starts to feel legible.
That matters for more than an exam. It matters for settling in, travelling more deeply, speaking to neighbours, understanding signs and news headlines, and taking part in everyday Bulgarian life without freezing at the wrong moment.
🏆 A2 complete — what you have achieved
Days 16–35 have taken you from early A2 to a solid pre-intermediate level. You can now order food and handle a full restaurant visit, navigate transport systems, describe health symptoms to a doctor, talk about work and daily life, use all three tenses (present, past, future), understand Bulgarian culture and history, and express opinions in conversation. The citizenship exam tests approximately A2 level. You are ready to attempt it.

Section 3
Bulgarian citizenship exam — complete guide
Everything you need to know before sitting it.
Naturalisation requirements and test administration can change, so treat this section as orientation, not legal advice. The safest approach is: use this lesson to prepare the language and culture, then confirm the current official process with the Ministry of Justice or the relevant Bulgarian authority handling your application.
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Official aim | The test is designed to show practical Bulgarian ability and basic civic-cultural knowledge for naturalisation applicants. |
| Working level | This course prepares you around A2, which is the right zone for the type of language usually associated with entry-level integration and citizenship preparation. |
| Likely topics | Expect grammar, vocabulary, reading, Bulgarian holidays, history, geography, symbols, and well-known national figures. |
| Course fit | Days 1-35 give you the language and cultural base. Day 31 is especially important for national symbols, holidays, and cultural references. |
| Current procedure | Always verify the latest format, booking process, fees, location, and required documents with the official institution handling your case. |
| Best strategy | First make your Bulgarian reliable. Then check the official instructions and practise under timed conditions with mock questions like the ones below. |
🔎 Important exam reality
The official sample tests published by the Institute of Education are written entirely in Bulgarian. That means learners should not expect English prompts or English answer choices in the real test. You may still see administrative guidance in Bulgarian on the official site, but the actual sample test content is Bulgarian-only.
🏆 What this course covers vs the exam
This course covers the core language and culture you need for citizenship preparation: everyday vocabulary, essential grammar, basic reading, national holidays, geography, symbols, traditions, and major historical-cultural references. If you can work confidently through the Day 15 and Day 35 mocks, you are in a strong position for the language side of preparation. Official procedures and precise test administration should still be checked separately.
Section 4
Citizenship exam simulation — 20 questions in 60 minutes

This first simulation is English-led for revision clarity, but it mirrors the official structure: 20 questions in one hour, with a pass mark of 12/20 (60%). Use it to check knowledge quickly before attempting the Bulgarian-only mock below.

Preparing for B1 — what comes next
Days 36–60 take you to independent user level.
Congratulations on completing the full A2 phase. B1 is where Bulgarian becomes genuinely powerful — you can handle unfamiliar situations, express nuanced opinions, understand most everyday conversation, and read Bulgarian texts. Here is what Days 36–60 cover:
| Days | Topic | What you will gain |
|---|---|---|
| 36 | Imperfect past tense | Describe ongoing/habitual past actions — "I was working", "she used to live" |
| 37 | Reported speech | Report what others said — "She said that...", "He told me..." |
| 38 | Conditional & wishes | Express hypotheticals — "If I were rich...", "I wish I could..." |
| 39 | Comparatives & superlatives (advanced) | Build complex comparisons and rankings |
| 40 | Passive voice | Understand and use passive constructions — "It was built in...", "Bulgarian is spoken by..." |
| 41–45 | Media, culture, formal writing, idioms | Read Bulgarian news, write formal letters, understand set phrases |
| 46–50 | Advanced grammar | Relative clauses, verb aspects, ordinal numbers, housing |
| 51–55 | Real-world Bulgarian | Education, business, immigration, reading and listening fluency |
| 56–59 | Revision and exam prep | Culture deep-dive, grammar revision, vocabulary review, oral exam simulation |
| 60 | B1 Final Mock | Full 30-question timed mock at B1 level |
💡 Your B1 reset checklist before Day 36
Before you start Day 36, make sure you can: (1) Conjugate regular verbs in present AND aorist — both groups. (2) Form the future with ще and the negative with няма да. (3) Use боли ме / болят ме correctly. (4) Know all 11 Bulgarian national holidays with dates. (5) State all Bulgarian neighbours and the highest peak. If any of these feel shaky, revisit the relevant day before moving on.
Day 35 Recap
Review before Day 36. Every point builds on the last.
| Topic | Key point | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A2 complete | Days 16–35: food, work, transport, health, past, future, culture, opinions. | 20 days of A2 — well done |
| Citizenship exam | 20 MCQ · 60 minutes · 60% to pass (12/20) · approximately A2 level | You are ready — attempt the real thing |
