Travel &
Airports

Air travel brings its own vocabulary — and when things go wrong at an airport, you need the right words fast. Today you master the full journey from check-in to landing.

📅 Day 29⏳ ~60 minutes🎤 Audio on every section✅ Quiz at the end
🔊 Speed:

🌍 Setting the scene

Air travel matters in Bulgaria in a very particular way. Sofia is the country's main year-round international air hub, but the rhythm of Bulgarian aviation changes with the seasons: Varna and Burgas become especially important in summer because of the Black Sea coast, while Plovdiv matters for South Bulgaria and winter access to ski regions.

So this lesson is not only about passports and boarding passes. It is also about understanding how Bulgaria connects: city breaks in Sofia and Plovdiv, family holidays on the coast, low-cost carriers, ski transfers, and the practical airport situations that visitors and Bulgarians alike deal with every day.

Bulgaria is now in the Schengen area. In practice, that changes the travel experience: if you arrive from another Schengen country, the trip often feels more like an internal European journey, while flights from non-Schengen places such as the UK still involve border control and document checks.

If Day 28 was about where you stay, Day 29 is about how you arrive. The vocabulary here gives you the language for a very real Bulgaria: terminals, passport control, delayed flights, missing bags, and the moment your trip either begins smoothly or goes completely wrong.

Section 4

Bulgarian airport reality

How air travel feels on the ground in Bulgaria.

💡 Bulgaria's airport map

Sofia Airport is the main year-round air gateway, but it is not the whole story. Varna and Burgas surge in importance during the Black Sea season, while Plovdiv matters for South Bulgaria and is relevant for winter traffic toward ski areas and mountain resorts.

Bulgaria's Schengen membership changes the practical flow too. When you arrive from another Schengen country, the experience can feel much closer to a domestic European journey. When you arrive from outside Schengen, for example from the UK, border control and document checks still remain part of the trip.

That is why airport Bulgarian in Bulgaria is never just generic vocabulary. It is tied to terminals, transfers, coastal resorts, ski routes, and the difference between a Schengen arrival and a non-Schengen arrival.
